Are You Still Not Using Legal Practice Management Software?

Does your law firm have law practice management software? If not, why not?

This is, after all, the 21st century and legal practice software has been around for many years now. However, it is true that even in the US, where they have been somewhat faster than we have in the UK to adapt, there are still only just over half of law firms using it.

This could be for a number of reasons. One of these may be the fact that, as lawyers, we have a huge amount of confidential client data that we don’t want falling into the wrong hands. Quite right, too. You may feel that your own local server is more secure than having all that information “out there” on the cloud, especially considering there have been a number of breaches that have received attention. However, most of those have been a result of human error, not a fault in the software.

The fact is that cloud based systems have all sorts of security built into them and most have regular attempted attacks in order to check that the said security cannot be breached, and to ensure that they comply with the requirements of the Solicitors Regulation Authority. Many cloud based systems are also audited by the British Standards Institution.

In fact, the short answer is that your data is likely to be more secure with cloud based law practice management software than you could ever achieve with an on premise system.

Security aside, there are many other benefits of a law practice management software system. Not least of these is that you can access all of your data from anywhere with an internet connection, so when you are sitting in court waiting for your case to commence you can be working from your laptop or tablet. Fee earners can be earning when they otherwise could not. In addition, you can use legal billing software to send out invoices, and produce attendance notes, record time, view emails, and access all of the documents concerning a case. Furthermore, you won’t be able to lose a file because everything is in one place.
