On-Premise Server Or The Cloud: Which Is More Secure?

Over the last couple of years, an increasing amount of legal case management software has become cloud based. This type of software allows for greater flexibility and faster speeds than server based software, yet still many lawyers cling on to the server in the belief that it is more secure than having all their client information “out there” on a server over which they have no control. Yet, is this really the case? If so, why are so many lawyers opting for cloud based software rather than using their own server?

The truth of the matter is that it is mostly psychological. With your own server, it is in your own office and nobody can attack it. But the fact is that, of course, it can be the target of a cyber-attack. In fact, the security of cloud based legal case management software is very likely to be greater than if it is based in your own office where it can be hacked or even physically attacked.  Suppliers of this software simply must take every precaution, failing which they would go out of business in very short order, and they cannot afford to run that risk.

The in-house server is the traditional solution and requires your own hardware, which can be extremely expensive in the first place, and at the same time just how much you are prepared to spend will dictate the speed and storage available. You will also need to pay for an IT specialist to oversee it, and you have to repair and replace it as your practice grows.

The cloud based legal case management software is far less expensive to run, since you are paying only for the amount of storage that you need.

The beauty of a cloud based system is that you can use it from anywhere that you can access the internet on any device. Even if a server goes down, which can happen, of course, another server can step in and take over so that your business keeps running.
