Some Points To Consider When Researching Legal Firms’ Software

When researching software for law firms in the UK remember to consider data security. Cybercrime has reached dangerous levels as displayed by the attack on NHS computer systems. Alright, the NHS is still using Windows 7 but even so you would not expect a security breach on that scale.

Your software supplier should be able to show that they are accredited to ISO 27001. This is the international standard for best security practice. They should also be Cyber Essentials accredited. This is a government backed certification scheme that sets out minimum levels of cyber security and is intended to prevent security breaches. A supplier should also undertake regular penetration tests and should be able to supply a report on the latest one.  Furthermore, the software should include an audit trail so that you can see if any users are accessing areas that they should not be, but better still the software should prevent them from doing so in the first place.

You should also be assured that all your existing data can be transferred to the new supplier’s software without loss of any of your information. But there is another point to consider too, and that is that if you subsequently decide to change suppliers again is it going to be possible to retrieve all the information in a usable format? You will find that some suppliers cannot do this, so before entrusting your data to a software supplier you should get confirmation IN WRITING that this can be done.

Of course, when researching software for law firms in the UK you should most definitely get a list of other practices that are using the software and check out with them their overall feelings about it. Don’t just rely on the testimonials on the supplier’s website. Ask questions from real users: they may have found some flaws that you would wish to avoid.
